Summary

The low cold resistance of Eucalyptus globulus is the main factor that affects its growth and also restricts the cultivation areas. Other species suggested to plant in cold zones have showed limitations for the Pulp Industry.

There are technological options to face this problem. One of the most interesting, is the traditional breeding and genetic improvement, based on selection, evaluation and finally mass production of the most resistant trees.

According to the above-mentioned reasons, the main objective of this project is to search and collect the best genotypes, and then create a cold-resistant line (race). This line will be economically used in the short term by clonal propagation schemes, and in the medium term will constitute a infusion-source population for the genetic improvement programs of the main Chilean Forestry Companies.
