Summary
The project recognizes the importance of diversify the forest production of the country, proposing the application of modern biotechnological tools to upgrade the genetic improvement program of lenga and to promote schemes of clonal forestry as an option to duplicate the genetic gains associated to the present scheme of improvement by way of seeds.
The degradation of the Chilean natural forests is also recognized as consequence of forest fires during the colonization and the traditional "floreo" (disgenic selection) to that they have been exposed. The project proposes an option to restore the genetic variability by means of the enrichment of forests degraded with selected genetic material obtained from individuals of high productive value.
Methodologically, the project built a micropropagation laboratory, which was used to develop a protocol to multiplicate in vitro selected individuals of lenga ( Nothofagus pumilio ). Later, the material amassed by the project could be used in the establishment of operational plantations, as well as in the enrichment of degraded forests, exhibiting important impacts in the conservation and increase of the productivity of the main forest resource of the region of Aysén.
For these effects and to promove the use of this material, the project will organize events of diffusion and transference; it will publish a technical document with the operative micropropagation of lenga; it will subscribe an agreement with a privated company to regulate the use at operational level of the micropropagated genetic material.
